You don’t need a million followers to get a NIL deal. You just need a smart pitch and local connections.
When people think of NIL deals, they often picture major national brands working with top-tier athletes. But for most student-athletes, the real opportunities are close to home—with local businesses that already support your school, team, or community.
Here’s how to approach a local brand with confidence and professionalism.
1. Do Your Research First
Before reaching out, take a few minutes to learn about the brand:
What do they sell or promote?
Who is their target customer?
Are they active on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok?
Have they worked with other athletes or influencers?
Understanding their vibe will help you create a pitch that aligns with their goals.
2. Make Sure Your Brand Is Ready
You don’t need to be perfect, but your online presence should be clean, consistent, and aligned with what you want to be known for. Make sure your Instagram bio, feed, and content reflect your values and sport.
Bonus: Have a short mission statement or personal brand summary ready to share.
3. Craft a Simple, Professional Message
Reach out via email or DM with a message like:
“Hi [Brand Name],I’m [Your Name], a [Sport] athlete at [School]. I love what you’re doing in our community and would love to talk about a potential NIL partnership. I’m passionate about [insert value or connection], and I think we could create some great content together.Let me know if you'd be open to a quick chat. I’ve attached my media kit for more info!”
Keep it short, friendly, and respectful of their time.
4. Pitch Something Specific
Give them an idea of what working with you could look like. For example:
Instagram post + story on game day
Wearing their merch in a workout video
A giveaway or special discount code for your followers
Show that you’re serious and already thinking like a brand partner.
5. Be Patient and Follow Up
Local businesses may be new to NIL too. Give them time, and don’t be afraid to follow up once after a few days. Whether it’s a yes or a not right now, stay respectful—you’re building relationships.
Final Thoughts
Your first NIL deal might not be flashy, but it can be meaningful. A single local partnership can open doors to long-term brand relationships and real growth.
