NIL has changed the game for student-athletes. Here’s what you need to know.

For decades, student-athletes brought energy, ticket sales, and national attention to their schools—yet they couldn’t earn a dime from their own name. That changed in 2021 when the NCAA introduced a new policy allowing athletes to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness, or NIL.

This new opportunity opens the door to brand deals, sponsorships, merchandise sales, and so much more. But what exactly is NIL, and why does it matter so much now?

Let’s break it down.

What Does NIL Mean?

NIL stands for Name, Image, and Likeness. These are three ways your identity can be used to promote a brand, sell a product, or earn attention.

  • Name is literally your name, like “Taylor Johnson”

  • Image includes photos, videos, or likenesses of you

  • Likeness means anything that represents you, like a cartoon version, voice, or personal slogan

When someone pays you to use those things for commercial purposes (for example, a local restaurant asking you to promote them on Instagram), that’s considered a NIL deal.

What Can You Do with NIL Rights?

If you’re eligible, you can use your NIL rights to:

  • Promote products or services on social media

  • Partner with local businesses

  • Launch your own merch line or brand

  • Get paid for appearances or shoutouts

  • Create sponsored YouTube or TikTok content

  • License your name or face to be used in video games or marketing materials

You can even work with nonprofits, write books, host camps, or start a podcast. NIL is about more than money—it’s about freedom and ownership of your identity.

Why NIL Matters for You

NIL gives student-athletes a chance to build something that lasts beyond the game. Here’s why it’s important:

  • It empowers you financially. NIL deals can help cover school expenses, build savings, or support your family.

  • It teaches you business skills. Learning how to negotiate, market yourself, and work with brands sets you up for long-term success.

  • It builds your future. Whether you turn pro or not, your personal brand can open doors in media, entrepreneurship, and beyond.

The earlier you start building your presence and learning the basics, the more prepared you’ll be when opportunities come.
